Costa Rica has earned its reputation as one of the world’s premier surf destinations, offering everything from beginner-friendly waves to expert-level breaks. At the heart of this surf haven lies Playa Santa Teresa—a beach town at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. With waves 365 days a year and a variety of beach, reef, and point breaks, the area caters to all levels and surfing styles.
Casa MarBella no longer offers on-site surfboard and boogie board rentals. However, several local surf shops within walking distance offer board rentals for every skill level.
We can still arrange surf lessons with experienced local instructors. Lessons last approximately 1.5 hours and can be booked as private or semi-private sessions, making them ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small groups. Whether you’re new to surfing or looking to improve your technique, our team will connect you with the right guide to match your level and goals.
This sand-bottom beach break features a slower wave ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. Best surfed at mid to high tide, Playa Carmen is a favorite spot for learning and skill progression thanks to its forgiving conditions.
Home to open beach breaks with faster, more powerful waves, Santa Teresa offers more punch than its neighboring beaches. Low tide brings out the best of this spot, making it ideal for intermediate to advanced surfers. On large swells, a fickle point break at the northern end can offer epic sessions for experienced riders.
Located just north of Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa is a long stretch of beach perfect for all levels. Beginners will enjoy the slow, gentle inside waves, while more advanced surfers can paddle out for faster, more hollow peaks on the outside.
This area features a mix of point and reef breaks that can hold large swells. When the waves pick up, this is the place to test yourself—just don’t forget your step-up board.
